The Masters leaderboard is where all the action at Augusta National takes place. Participation in The Masters is limited to the top 50 players and ties, including recent major champions, winners of full-point tournaments on the PGA Tour during the previous season, leaders in the Official World Golf Ranking and some leading amateurs. The Masters is the first major championship of the calendar year and a green jacket is awarded to the winner each year.
Scottie Scheffler and Tyrrell Hatton hold a share of the lead after three rounds, while Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners and Ludvig Aberg trail a stroke back. Defending champion Justin Rose is also within striking distance of the top spot as the 89th Masters gets underway at 2 p.m. Sunday on CBS Sports.
A birdie on 15 kept McIlroy near the top of the leaderboard, but he lost his grip when his third shot on the par-5 second found the slope and took a nasty tumble into the water. That left him with a double-bogey 7 and dropped him to two under.
Zach Johnson was the round’s best finisher, carding a six-under 66 that included two eagles. He will tee off last in the final round, alongside Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy will be seeking to finally win the green jacket at a course that has long troubled him. Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson are among the honorary starters who have picked McIlroy to claim the green jacket this year.
