The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of the first World Series since 1918 to be decided by seven games, and there is already much for fans to digest. From a Yankees victory in Game 4 to the stunning ejection of Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill, here are some highlights from this crazy series so far.
The ’80s:
The Detroit Tigers became the first team in baseball history to win a World Series wire-to-wire, including all six games at home. That included an unprecedented 5-0 start, the longest winning streak in postseason history, and the only series in MLB history to end on a walk-off home run (Joe Carter’s ninth-inning three-run blast against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 6). Manager Sparky Anderson was the first to win back-to-back World Series titles as a manager, having won with the Cincinnati Reds in 1975 and 1976.
2022:
In a season that seemed to be set up for a World Series sweep, the Houston Astros became the first team since the 1987 Minnesota Twins to force a deciding seventh game on their opponent’s home field. Despite being in a 5-1 Series deficit, the Astros took advantage of a muffed fly ball by center fielder Aaron Judge and an inexplicable misplay by shortstop Ryan Brasier to erase a five-run deficit and beat the New York Yankees in Game 7.
This year’s World Series features a host of talented players from around the globe, many of whom have fled their homelands for North America in pursuit of the high salaries that come with playing in the major leagues. These foreign stars are giving this year’s World Series a unique flavor, and their contributions will make for an unforgettable championship.
