World Athletics Championship — formerly known as the IAAF World Championships in Athletics — is the biennial championship of track and field athletics organised by the international body World Athletics (previously International Association of Athletic Federations). It is the world’s top-level competitive event in the sport of athletics and it also serves as the main qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games.
The 2025 edition in Tokyo is expected to be a gripping and tightly-contested affair, with the Great Britain team targeting medals all over the park after securing five relay golds in Paris. Keely Hodgkinson is gold-medal favourite in the women’s 800m, while heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson will seek to make it six global podiums from seven finals this summer. Middle-distance runner Kerr is another medal contender in the men’s 1500m, while pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis can target his fifth consecutive title in the discipline and a first clearance above 6.30m.
GB’s 4x400m quartet of Poppy Malik, Yemi Mary John, Nicole Yeargin and Victoria Ohuruogu secured a bronze on day three of the competition, while marathon runner Emile Cairess and high jumper Morgan Lake are also medal candidates. However, not everything has gone to plan so far and a DNF in the men’s 4x100m heat by Eugene Amo-Dadzie – who set off too early on the first handover – left them 22nd on Sunday’s final table. It was a heart-breaking result for a team which has won silver or bronze at nine of the last 10 world championships.
