After 4 decades, the Dodgers and Yankees are versing each other in the World Series. Here are the top highlights from Game 1 between the two long-time rivals.
The 1993 World Series featured one of the most dramatic finishes to a championship in baseball history. Joe Carter’s three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Blue Jays to a 8-6 victory over the New York Yankees. It was the first World Series ended by a walk-off homer and remains one of the most famous in baseball history.
LOS ANGELES — The Yankees and Dodgers traded runs in the first inning of Game 1 of the World Series, but neither team scored in the second or third. Gerrit Cole struck out the side in the fourth, but the Dodgers took a 5-5 lead into the bottom of the fifth when the Yankees committed three egregious errors, starting with Aaron Judge’s muffed fly ball and ending with Teoscar Hernandez tying the score with a double.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts opted to send out Jake Cousins to get the final 3 outs of the eighth inning with runners on first and 2nd. He got Will Smith to fly out and walked Gavin Lux. After a wild pitch by Bob Stanley, the runners advanced to second and third. He then struck out Austin Wells to end the inning.
The World Series resumes Thursday at Dodger Stadium. Several celebrities are expected to attend, including actor Bryan Cranston and musicians Billie Eilish and Finneas. Download the USA TODAY app for award-winning coverage, crosswords, audio storytelling, the eNewspaper and more.
